CH Prepares to Visit the Farm
Throughout the seven Children’s House classrooms, teachers and students are embracing the changing seasons with a special focus on practical life activities centered around fall themes. The practical life hands-on activities not only engage the child’s independence, fine motor coordination, sense of order, and concentration but also fosters essential life skills and connection with the real world.
immersing themselves in farm-related tasks that promote independence and responsibility. From sorting and washing vegetables to creating seasonal flower arrangements using natural materials, these activities enhance fine motor skills while allowing children to connect with nature. The sensory experience of handling pumpkins, apples, and gourds deepens their understanding of the harvest season.
Teachers report that children are particularly enthusiastic about learning how to care for plants and pets in the classroom. They are tasked with watering and dusting leaves, observing, and feeding the class animals (fish, guinea pigs, birds, rabbits, geckos, and sometimes, Mako!) introducing concepts of botany and ecology in a practical way. Additionally, simple cooking activities, such as making apple sauce, encourage teamwork and promote healthy eating habits.
The Montessori method emphasizes the importance of real-life skills, and these fall-themed activities provide a rich context for learning. Soon the Children’s House classrooms will visit the Farm for hayrides, apple picking, and visiting the animals. As students explore the rhythms of farm life first through literature and activities and then on their field trip, they develop not only practical skills but also a deeper appreciation for the environment and the food they consume.
Incorporating seasonal themes into practical life activities allows Harborlight teachers to create a dynamic learning experience that is both educational and enjoyable. As fall unfolds, the children Montessori are not just studying the farm—they are experiencing it.
